Elementary Students Experiment With Coffee At Brookfield Zoo Science Fair

Baking Powder Teeth Whitening
Children brewed coffee, made cupcakes and distracted their fellow students to prepare for the regional science fair held at Brookfield Zoo Thursday. The Chicago Zoological Society, which operates Brookfield Zoo, reported 169 students from 17 schools participated in the West Suburban Consortium for Academic Excellence annual science fair. Jack Roh, a sixth-grader from Gower Middle School in Burr Ridge, said his experiment comparing the whitening ability of different brands of toothpaste was his parents' idea. He soaked eggs in coffee to stain them before brushing them with four different kinds of toothpaste using a soft toothbrush. Teeth enamel is made of calcium phosphate crystals and an eggshell is made of calcium carbonate crystals, Jack said. Of the four brands he tested, Jack reported Arm & Hammer Advance White whitened the eggs the best. Several other students used coffee as a key component in their experiments. Sophia Lee and Rama Bhagwat, eighth-graders at Butler Junior High in Oak Brook, wanted to find out how grinding time affects the darkness of coffee. The girls took coffee beans and ground five different batches from five to 25 seconds. They concluded, the longer you grind the beans, the darker the coffee. They shone a laser pointer through clear glass cups of brewed coffee at a light meter and measured how much light penetrated. He compared how watering pea plants with different liquids affected how fast and how high they grew over four weeks. He expected the plants watered with commercial plant food would grow the best, but his experiment showed the plants watered with coffee grew the tallest.

The American Dental Association has endorsed several brands of sugar free gum made by companies like Dentyne and Ice Breakers for this purpose. Tooth-whitening kit: These can be a little pricey but are generally considered effective. The kit which you can get from a dentist, contains a gel-like solution you insert into a tray, which goes over your teeth daily for up to 20 minutes. The down side is that although they work by successfully bleaching your teeth, they may contain harmful corrosive ingredients as indicated on the label. Brush with bicarbonate of soda: This cheap, (costs only Sh30) harmless food-grade powder is highly effective when used regularly over a prolonged period. Also known as baking soda, it helps to alkalise your mouth and get rid of bad breath. A natural exfoliant, it removes stubborn particles more effectively than toothpaste on its own. Most natural toothpastes contain this valuable ingredient. It is best used in conjunction with a diluted hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse for a maximum antibacterial and deodorising effect. Activated charcoal: You can buy the powdered form from your local chemist or health food store. This sterile, natural substance is famous for removing poisons from your system and is often used in medical emergency rooms. You can simply empty the contents of a capsule onto your toothbrush and gently brush your teeth. Hold it in your mouth for two to three minutes. Rinse well and brush with your usual toothpaste. Within a week you will see results. The charcoal works by binding to tannin and other staining substances and drawing them to itself like a magnet. NOTE: There are a number of other ways to whiten your teeth, but these are just three of the ones I have tried. Note that these recommendations are not meant to be used in place of the advice of a qualified medical practitioner. Try it for yourself and admire your pearly whites!
